Geocache Description:

Welcome to the Victorian 1700m+ ASL Challenge cache. This is a culmination cache for hikers and those interested in researching and locating caches that have been placed above 1700m. As at April 2013 there were 37 caches that can assist you in your task.

To log this challenge you are required to post finds on 15 different caches that are placed (GZ) at 1700m or above sea level and is restricted to those peaks located specifically within Victoria. Caches such as Virtuals, Web Cams, Earth caches and Event caches of any description are not eligible.   When logging, please list the caches found (Cache Name, GC Number, Elevation and a brief experience).  Caches that have been found retrospectively are acceptable as are caches which have been archived. Any caches placed as hides will also be considered acceptable as long as GZ is 1700m or higher (multi point caches and unknown caches may have the starting point lower than 1700m).

This cache is located at the listed co-ordinates and you are welcome to note your visit in the log book at GZ at any time convenient to you.  Once the qualifying caches have been completed the note may be changed to a find with the relevant caches noted.

Given the number of hikes that may be required to log this Challenge cache we have rated it as a difficulty 5, the terrain is specific to accessing this cache only.  Accordingly you will need to possess a reasonable level of fitness and be prepared to complete some significant hikes in the alpine region.  Please ensure that your hikes are well planned, that you sign your intention in the books available at the commencement of the hikes and that you ensure that your movements are advised to friends or relatives in case of emergency prior to each trip.  We strongly recommend that you hike in pairs at a minimum.  WE DO NOT RECOMMEND THAT THIS CACHE OR ANY QUALIFYING CACHES BE ATTEMPTED IN THE SNOW SEASON.

There are a number of existing caches in play to achieve this reward.  This will give those who wish to accept this challenge the ability to select caches that are most suitable.

How do I get there?

5klm – approximately 1.5 to 2 hours return – classified as “Easy”

The walking track to Roper Lookout commences several kilometres past Falls Creek along the Bogong High Plains Road. Cross over the Rocky Valley dam wall and park your car near the information board on the other side (eastern end) of the dam wall sign-posted ‘Roper’s Lookout’. Follow the well-maintained grassy track along the old aqueduct for 1.5km. From here, begin a short ascent through the snow gums onto a small basalt knoll, known as Ropers Lookout.  Please remain on the walking track at all times until you are within 10-15m of GZ.  Take the time to access the lookout proper to enjoy some great views of the surrounding area. Given that this cache lies below 1700m it can not be listed as a qualifying cache.

Be Prepared

The best months for walking are from November through to April, however, weather conditions can change rapidly, and snowfalls and blizzards can occur at any time of the year.  During the summer period, bushfires can also pose a threat so check the CFA website for updates prior to departure.

Be prepared with:

• Wind and waterproof jackets
• Warm clothing – hat, gloves, sunglasses, and strong footwear
• Food and water
• First aid kit and sunscreen
• Map and compass
• Check the weather forecast before departing
• Let someone know where you are going
• Mobile phone (reception in some areas)
