Geocache Description:

This cache is located in the former Mitchel Field Military Base which closed in 1961 and was turned over to the County of Nassau.

Mitchel Field Airport and Military Base has a great deal of historical background and I thought I would share some with you as you look for caches in the area. I grew up here and witnessed alot of changes over time.
Mitchel Field got its name on July 16, 1918, when it was named for Major John Purroy Mitchel, a former mayor of New York who was killed 10 days earlier in a training flight in Louisiana. Some of the original buildings are still there. It is now home to musuems, schools, business, residences, shopping areas, and many more things. Some of the area is still untouched and I am happy for that.

The cache is a 4"x 4" plastic container filled with some goodies. Parking is good and it is a relatively easy "park & grab".
