This is the forty-fifth of a series, the Caerphilly Collection, that will explore the whole Borough Council area. Getting to this cache, in a medium size plastic lunch box, provides opportunities to glimpse a hidden reservoir. Expect a walk of about a mile, on field and woodland paths, with 200' of ascent. The route may be muddy in parts.
The Caerphilly Collection is distinguished with a unique CC number and is made up of 50 caches. The caches vary in difficulty and type and usually have other "C" word connections - castle, cheese, coal, canal, etc. There may even be Cryptic Clues for Clever Clogs! The current Caerphilly unitary authority grew out of the former Rhymney Valley and Islwyn Councils and stretches from the outskirts of Cardiff and Newport in the south to the Brecon Beacons, north of Rhymney. Despite a past dominated by coal and heavy industry, it has a diverse history and varied and dramatic scenery. We hope you will enjoy exploring it with us.
Towards the end of the Collection is CC48 The Accumulator, the location of which is given in coded form. The translation details of the code are distributed around the whole Collection, but only about a third of the caches will contain a piece of the code, which is on the back of the Log Book. To do the Accumulator, you will need to keep a note of each piece of code that you find. Unless you are very lucky, you will need to find the majority of the Collection in order to do the Accumulator. The Accumulator cache is hidden in an area of difficult terrain and demanding navigation, with a 5,4½ rating.
Pant-yr-eos Reservoir was opened in 1878, but is now privately owned and used for fly-fishing. It does also serve as a summer haven for wildlife. Because of its restricted access and the surrounding trees, it is truly a hidden reservoir - how many people in nearby Ty-sign know it exists or have seen it? Perhaps the optimum time to do this cache would be a frosty winter day: there would be no leaves on the trees, GPS reception would be better and the mud would be frozen. At any other time, be prepared!
A few yards from the cache, a feint path goes down to a point where there is a clear view across the reservoir - BUT BE CAREFUL IF YOU FOLLOW THIS PATH: IT ENDS ABRUPTLY ON THE EDGE OF A DEEP STONE CHANNEL.
Limited verge parking is available at N 51 36.870 W 003 04.928. Signals seem particularly poor at the cache site, due to tree cover and the steep hillside. On different days, we have got GPS readings that vary by significantly more than the indicated accuracy. To compensate for this, the hint should assist. If visitors get better (or just different) readings, please include the coordinates in your log.
