Geocache Description:

This cache is in Van Patten Woods and is hidden about 35' off the Des Plaines River Trail. Follow the road or trail by the parking area. It will lead you to the DRT. The park is open from 6:30 a.m. until sunset.

Toads and frogs are direct descendents of prehistoric animals. One of the main differences between a toad and a frog is that a toad has no teeth and a frog does. Frogs can breathe through their skin. Toads only breathe through their mouths. Frogs also have longer legs than toads and lay their eggs in clumps instead of strings.

Frogs were thought to be weather prophets because they are usually near water and appear in large numbers after heavy rains. They feel humidity changes and are more susceptible to atmospheric changes (like a modern day barometer).

Native American Indians believed the croaking of frogs brought rain. They imprisoned frogs when a drought came so they could induce them to bring rain. They gave the frogs gentle beatings so they would make croaking sounds. If it didn’t rain, they would beat them some more (What?).

Some common frog and toad superstitions include:
- A toad in the cellar brings bad luck and must be removed with care.
- If you kiss a frog, it will turn into a prince.
- Wearing a frog charm has power to keep love and attract friends.
- Touching a toad will give you warts.
