Ruins of Zrínyi-castle

The ground of Zrínyi-castle belongs to Örtilos village but it is easier to reach from Belezna village in case you drive from Belezna to Belezna railway station and you park at the bridge of Principális-brook (N46° 19,587’ E16° 52,713’ 110m). Then you go southward along the tourist path signed by red + .The distance is only 350 m on foot. You cross the Visszafolyó-brook on a little wooden bridge and you will find altered origine ruins there.

1. 20th century. At the beginning of 1950s both Yugoslavie and Hungary were socialist countries, but the relation between Yugoslavie and Soviet Union deteriorated. The Hungarian communist government, as SU requested, got redy for war and a 600 km long defensive zone was established along the south border („Hungarian Maginot.line”). You can find some machine-gun pillboxes here. Fortunately, this defensive zone never was utilized.

2. 17th century.

Turkish (Osmanly) army occupied Hungary’s south part in second half of 1500s. Three strong castle defended the south-west border: Csáktornya, Légrád and Nagykanizsa in 1600s. Zrínyi Miklós VII. the commander-in-chief of Hungarian army, built the New-Zrínyi-castle here because of big distance between Légrád and Nagykanizsa in 1663. The Osmanly army sieged the castle with 60 thousand soldiers on 1664.06.02. and occupied on 1664.06.30. They killed 1500 defenders who were German, Hungarian and Croatian heroes. After this, Köprülü Ahmed the Turkish commander made his soldiers blow up the buildings and walls and undo the earthwork mounds. You can find a modest war memorial in this place.

Remembrance of Zrínyi Miklós VII.

Zrínyi Miklós was the great-grandchild of Zrínyi Miklós IV. who was the Croatian vice-king and the Szigetvár hero in 1566. You know Croatia was coupled country with Hungary under the rule of Hungarian Holy Crown with local autonomy from 11th century. From this time, the Croatian Subic, later the Zrínyi family was charged with the Croatian vice-king’s dignitary because the Zrínyi family is the descendant of Subic family.Zrínyi Miklós VII. was born in a Hungarian-Croatian marriage and he was also a Hungarian language poet (his younger brother, Zrínyi Péter was a Croatian language poet). The Hungarian and Croatian people esteem him as a common hero (Zrínyi Miklós - Nikola Zrinski) now.
