4.23. Unarchiving a Geocache

The archiving of a geocache is intended to be a permanent status. That is why only community volunteer reviewers and Geocaching HQ staff have the capability to unarchive it. This is done only in rare circumstances and only if it meets the current Geocache Listing Guidelines.

If a geocache is archived by a reviewer or staff for lack of maintenance it will not be unarchived.

Geocache Description:

You are looking for images of some of the most famous characters in Australian literature. To find the microcache you need to read the plaque about the author and solve this puzzle: S 31° 57 .(365 + number of letters in her first and second name) E 115° 51.(573 + author’s age when she died – 35)

The Gumnut babies were created by May Gibbs (1877 & 1969), one of Australia's most treasured illustrators, artists and children's book authors. Born in England, May moved with her family to Australia when she was 4 years old. I could draw before I could walk she recalled in later life, and after returning to England to study art she established herself as a successful illustrator with the Western Mail Magazine in Perth. In 1913 she moved to Sydney where she soon discovered the natural beauty of the Blue Mountains bushland and from her imagination the bush fairyland began to emerge. In 1918, May's most ambitious work to date, Tales of Snugglepot and Cuddlepie, featuring the Gumnut babies, was published and has never been out of print. May Gibbs was also Australia's first woman cartoonist and produced weekly comic strips syndicated across Australia and New Zealand. In 1967 May completed her last cartoon and retired. Two years later, May Gibbs passed away in Sydney aged 92 years. May Gibbs' WA connection: When the family first came to WA they moved to the Harvey area, living on land originally owned by Governor Stirling. There is a May Gibbs Gumnut Baby Display at the Harvey Visitor Centre. Moving to the city, May Gibbs and her family lived in South Perth. To honour her long connection with the district, the City of South Perth purchased a collection of original paintings by May and her parents Herbert and Cecie. Selected items from this collection are on permanent display at Heritage House in Mill Point Road South Perth. Solve the puzzle below to find the final coordinates for the cache!
