"Hello,
I am a Ranger with Midpeninsula Regional Open Space District. Today, 7/14/07, I removed the cache titled "Old Growth Redwood" on the Timberview Trail in El Corte de Madera Preserve. On your website, it is number 9 placed by "geekster" and "ghoff." Per our policy, cahces must be clearly identified on the outside of the box as a geocache box. This ammo case had no marking on the exterior at all. A concerned hiker reported it to me as something suspicious. I have the entire ammo box in our lost and found at the Skyline Field Office. It can be picked up by appointment at (650)949-1848, or skylineranger@openspace.org. Sorry for any inconvenience, the District has a new Geocaching Policy to ensure that geocaching remains fun and accessible on District lands without harming the environment. Thanks,"

How Geocaching Works

Geocache Description:

A very large Old Growth Redwood tree deep inside El Corte de Madera Creek OSP.

As San Francisco flourished following the discovery of gold in California, logging of the coastal redwood forests was needed in order to supply the building materials for the growth. The remote nature of this preserve coupled with its steep terrains, kept loggers away until the 1860s. Resourceful entrepreneurs spent the next 50 years building and operating eight different mills along the creek banks of the preserve. Modern logging continued off and on until 1988, shortly after the open space preserve was created. This tree is one of the few Old Growth Redwoods that survived the logging efforts in this area.

The cache itself is an ammo can stocked with various goodies, please trade evenly or up so that others who make this hike may find something nice also, and please rehide the cache well. There are a number of other caches in this area so make a day of it and visit them all !

The preserve hours are dawn until one-half hour after sunset, please respect the posted hours and cache only during these times.
