Geocache Description:

PARK MAKSIMIR

Danas on predstavlja prvorazredni antikni živi dio gradskog prostora kojem treba zadržati i sačuvati prestižno mjesto među europskim povijesnim znamenitostima suvremenim pristupom zaštiti i načinu korištenja.

Maksimir Park, which was originally created on the outskirts of Zagreb at the end of the 18th and in the first half of the 19th century, is today completely surrounded by urban settlements. And in such a new environment, Maksimir Park is a place where, despite its small area of 316 hectares, many plant and animal species have found refuge. Due to the preserved centuries-old oak forests, its value for the protection of endangered species associated with old hollows is great. Thus, more than a hundred species of birds have been recorded in Maksimir Park, of which hollow birds stand out. It is interesting to note that in Maksimir Park, the population density of the red-headed woodpecker (Dendrocopos medius), a species endangered on a European scale, is one of the largest in the world. Other species of animals related to old forests are also significant, such as squirrels and some species of bats, otherwise globally endangered groups of animals.

In addition to forests in Maksimir Park, we can find meadows, lakes and streams, which are also important habitats for various plants and animals, and thus contribute to its biodiversity.

At the time of its creation, Maksimir Park was the most modern, elite and most popular project in the city and much wider, to which the names and policies of the current period are connected. Today, it represents a first-class ancient living part of the urban space that should retain and preserve a prestigious place among European historical sites with a modern approach to protection and use.
