Geocache Description:

The cache is a magnetic nano. Bring you own pen. Please replace carefully exactly as found. Situated on Ramsgate harbour, the cache has wheelchair access via the longer route along Harbour Parade and Military Road.

The stone steps known as Jacob's Ladder were built in 1826 by Jacob Steel to replace the original wooden steps which were built in 1753, and were then the only access to the West Pier. The steps were regularly used by smugglers and became known locally as 'Smugglers' Stairs'. Smuggling folklore recalls how a local smuggler, Peter Twyman, was observed by a Riding Officer in Pegwell Bay as he collected tubs of spirits from a lugger and loaded them onto his horse. The Officer, also on horseback, gave chase. However, as they approached Ramsgate Harbour it became obvious that Twyman was losing ground, his horse being weighed down by the contraband. He made his escape by riding his horse up Jacob's Ladder - a feat which the Officer was not prepared to attempt! The cache is at the bottom of Jacob's Ladder and a visit to the nearby Sailor's Church is recommended.
