Napušteni kamenolom/Abandoned quarry Traditional Geocache

This cache has been archived.

Nikrmana: Unfortunately there's been some continuing issues with this cache and there is no reaction from the owner. Thus as there is no option to replace the cache, I am archiving it. I'm also archiving it to keep it from continually showing up in search lists, and to prevent it from blocking other cache placements.

If you wish to repair/replace the cache sometime in the future, please contact Geo Sova or Nikrmana by send email from their profile, with a cache GC number included. Assuming cache meets the guidelines, we'll be happy to unarchive it.

Geocache Description:

EN: On the southern slopes of Medvednica, we come across an abandoned quarry Bizek. Once served as the primary source of raw materials (marl) for a cement plant in Podsused. Stone from here was used to built a main post office building in Jurisiceva as well as the Zagreb Cathedral. When the new stone is needed for the reconstruction of the cathedral, then the quarry temporarily opens and the required stone is excavated. A tunnel has been dug from a quarry to the cement plant, for the purpose of transporting marl. Apparently, it was a 3.20 m high and 2.5 m wide, and over 2 km long. Although after the closure of cement plants and quarries (and therefore the cessation of commercial use of tunnels) there were plans to cultivate mushrooms in it, the entrance and exit of the tunnel were buried. One local told me that this was because there were "various things" happening in the tunnel, without going into details ...
When the tunnel was flooded for the first time, a huge cable railway had been built for the same purpose (transport stone to cement plant). Its supporting pillars still exist, and are well visible along the road on the way up there. Quarry itself is interesting even today, because it very easy to find all sorts of fossils, without any major excavation (so, bring a hammer).
For more details about this fascinating place I recommend to watch this excellent video about the structure, in the first part of which we see a building that we’re about to visit. Also, a couple of good articles on the history of the Bizek quarry on the pages of Unknown Zagreb, Zdenko's Corner and Croatia Infiltration (everything in croatian only, I’m afraid).
This cache is hidden in a building that served as the engine for the cable railway. There are 3-4 floors, with frightening large installations whose end or the bottom I cannot see (at least the uppermost level, where the cache is hidden). THERE IS NO NEED TO GO ON THE LOWER LEVELS!!!
