Geocache Description:

Welcome to Prairieview Education Center

Located in part of the Silver Creek Conservation Area, outdoor recreation includes 6.5 miles of hiking and cross country skiing. Much of this site is restored prairie.  It is the results of this restoration that makes it one of the best.

Fairly long hike to the cache.

Education Center

The Prairieview Education Center serves thousands of people with low-cost nature programs, youth field trips, summer camps and school field trips.  The facility often hosts traveling exhibits, has a reference library and a family drop-in “Exploration Station.”

History

Prairieview’s main building was once the home of Otto and Hazel Rhoades.  Otto was the founder and president of the former Sun Electric Company (now Snap On Tools).  He designed and built a state of the art 1940’s barn and a 7,500 square foot home in 1945.  That home has been renovated into the Prairieview Education Center.

Most of our prairies were plowed under for agriculture as our ancestors found the Illinois prairie soils to be some of the richest on earth.  In areas such as these, the McHenry County Conservation District is working hard to restore these prairies back to their native beauty.  You are standing in the middle of a prairie that the District began restoring about 21 years ago.  From here you can see Silver Creek and its adjoining wetlands where the Conservation District has also done extensive restoration work.

GeoSeries Question
