The cache is a small lock-n-lock style container hidden near the
summit of Caistel na-h-Iolaire (717m), which translates as
Stronghold of the Eagle, and probably refers to the prominent tor
at the eastern end of the summit ridge. There is a path of sort
signposted from near to the shop in Pirnmill, which follows the
northern edge of the Allt Gobhlach gorge. From the top of the gorge
there is the vaguest of sheep tracks across the peat moss south to
Coire Roinn.
Caistel na-h-Iolaire is at the southern end of the
Sleeping Jelly Babies and this cache can be linked with the
others along the ridge to give one of the finest ridge walks on
Arran, especially if you are put off by the crowds on
Goatfell. The complete traverse, starting and finishing at
Pirnmill is around 14.5km, although a quick up and down from
Pirnmill is 8km and could include a scramble along the north ridge
of Beinn Bharrain. If you do intend to traverse all the way
around Coire Roinn, you should be aware that this involves a
technical scramble and is not advised in poor weather or
visibility.
