Geocache Description:

flood of 1973 Walking bridge

The Great Flood of 1973

In 1973, I was a six year old little girl that didn’t like thunder. In October of this year
the great flood drown Enid, OK. Huge amounts of rainfall fell over my town. The records show 12 inches in 3hours. The cause of the storm to me was unknown at the time ;but now the low pressure center that moved northeastward along a slowly moving cold front was to blame. Through the eyes of this small little girl was fear every time I looked out the window and the rain kept falling. I could see the water rising on my block and into my front yard at 1306 E. Oklahoma Street. After an hour or so I could see the fear in my parent’s eyes then I reported this yucky feeling in my stomach. We tried to hear the news and listen to the radio weather report but most were unsuccessful. My dad moved us to higher ground. We went to some friend’s house few blocks west of us. If I remember right we spent the night at their house. When it was Safe to return we drifted back down the hill to find our house had sustained little flooding (replace furnace) but our dog was in desperate of help floating on top his doghouse. I just remember all the stories about people on their roof tops and several people drowned in the flooding waters some reports as many as ten dead. My dad was part of a search and rescue team a day or two afterwards. Many people talked about the cars that drifted into the ditch at St. Mary’s Hospital and the sick were in need of power and telephone. This day in 1973 Enid was shut down completely from one side of town to the other. Parents reported children trapped in the attic or on their roofs. Included in this article is some picture I discovered in my parents albums. Some estimate the cost at 78 million dollars in damage. Enid, OK made many weather precipitation articles. Many people in this area Fear tornados but they should fear the repeat of the flood of 1973. Without proper storm Drainage systems in place this could easily happen again. Enid has managed to build a series of detention ponds west and northwest of Enid some are behind businesses along the flood diversion channel. “Drainage is one of those things out of sight out of mind” said one of Enid natives. The more pavement the more storm water challenges. Everyone should learn about their town storm drainage and keep current on the ways to avoid flooding. There are emergency management teams in place now and declaring an Emergency is the mayor’s decision. So there is a system in place if there is a local Flooding problem again. As you adventure though this multi cache realize these bridges are Part of a drainage system that runs through this town to keep people safe. These tributaries help divert storm rainfall. Take the time to think about where all that rains goes during April and May and sometimes October. Have a great adventure finding the walking bridges of Enid. BE SAFE?
