RWC Hills Beacon - Endangered Landmark Traditional Geocache

This cache has been archived.

ChrissySkyking + Blaze: Cache has been replaced closer to the parking lot since too many people kept thinking the top of the hill was off limits. Since the cache has been moved a little distance, we created a new cache so people can find and log it as a new one.

Geocache Description:

Visit one of the best views in town, as well as a well-known landmark that many of you have seen, but never come close to.

This beacon has been on top of this very high hill in Redwood City for 50 years or so (sorry, we don't have any exact dates). We've always been meaning to visit it to see what's up there, so today we found the right roads, walked up to it, and planted a cache.

The container has been replaced and is now a small tupperware bowl that is camoed and has the usual goodies and trinkets inside. It should be harder for geo-muggles to find, now.

This landmark has been under fire by many in the community who have a cross to bear with landmarks of this type. We hope it stays around for a long time because it really is a beacon to many people, as well as just being historic.

The terrain is 2.5 due to the semi-steep uphill climb. However, you can park 300 feet from the cache, go around the gate, and most of the rest is pavement or hardpacked dirt uphill. See picture of the gate you can go around. There are five separate paths to the cache, some much harder than others, but going around the fence up the driveway is the easiest. Dogs are allowed on a leash. The area is open sunrise to sunset.

The views from up here are great! You can even see downtown San Jose on a clear day. Getting up here and parking will be the hardest part of the trip (you can park in front of the gate, as there are no signs prohibiting it)! Good luck!
