The castle could have been built as early as 1067 just after the Norman conquest of 1066, it's now ruins and this is partly due to freeze-thaw weathering.
Freeze-thaw weathering:
1. Water becomes trapped in a crack or joint in the rock.
2. If the air temperature drops below freezing, the water will freeze and expand by 9-10 per cent putting pressure on the rock.
3. The ice will melt when the temperature rises above freezing.
4. If this process happens repeatedly, the rock will weaken and eventually shatter as seen on the castle.
5. This is not the only reason the castle is now ruins.
It was partially demolished in 1764 to provide stone.

Facilities
Parking: There is no on site parking available at the castle. There are a number of nearby pay & display car parks which can be used by visitors to the castle, including a multi storey car park opposite the castle.
Toilets: There are no public toilets available on the site.
Dogs are welcome on and off leads across the site.
The sight is manged and run by English Heritage.
