Geocache Description:

A couple of years ago we started to spend a lot of time around La Calamine / Kelmis. It is a very interesting and beautiful area, rich in history and culture,  and not least in natural treasures, in any sense. We walk and look at a lot at things, and our recent geocaching hobby fits in nicely. So we started to put caches on our own, in order to share the experience - we hope you enjoy. The region historically, and culturally, connects what now is p0art of three of the countries of then European Union: Belgium, The Netherlands, and Germany. This cache here was placed just across the border, in The Netherlands. The Vaalsbroek site comprises the former castle, now a seminar center, with its parc and its water mill production building, now providing a restaurant. . The parc alone is worthwhile a visit. It is not big but offers huge and precious old trees, gigantic rhododendron plants, beautiful when in blossom, rare local orchids in a wet meadow, ... beautiful sights and, not least, modern art scattered into the setting. In autumn, the pond is an overnight shelterfor wild geese traveling South, and the whole year there are marsh birds and forest birds. The owner takes care to provide food, and you can enjoy watching whoever is taking the offer! You might meet hotel guests on exercises or promenading, but the parc is open to all public, and represents a paradise kind of place. Some former owners built a mausoleum on a small hill, just aside the parc, looking towards the lake & mill. Once you make it there, the cache is close. Behind the mausoleum you will find a friut garden with a picnic place - if you bring your food, you may enjoy a beautiful summer evening out there.
