The hike is about 1.6 miles on a well worn but rocky trail. It
rises a little over 500 ft to an elevation of 3280 ft. The hike is
beautiful and the view from the cache site is spectacular. The
cache is an ammo can. It lies off the trail about 100 yards
south-west and above the smelter ruins.
The area is in the Sequoia National Forest so there is always the
chance of meeting BEARS, MOUNTAIN LIONS, RATTLESNAKES, TICKS and
the ever-popular POISON OAK. Please be careful. A warning sign has
been placed at the Whiskey Flat Trailhead regarding a mountain lion
sighting but that could be anywhere along the fifteen mile Whiskey
Flat Trail. There was some poison oak along a small portion of the
Bull Run Creek trail but it was easy to avoid. If you don't know
what poison oak looks like, just don't touch anything with leaves.
If you find yourself "bushwhacking" you are not on the trail. From
the parking area at the end of the road, continue on foot till you
find the trail west. You do not need to cross Bull Run Creek.
Hiking boots and long pants are recommended.
The cache contains:
- One-time-use camera (please photograph yourselves)
- Notebook, pen & pencil to log your visit
THE CONTENTS OF THE CACHE WERE RUINED BY THE BULL FIRE IN JULY
2010. THE CACHE WAS COMPLETELY REPLACED ON OCT. 28, 2010. The new
contents include: A baseball, a corkscrew, a deck of cards, a boat
whistle and a screwdriver set with multiple types of points. The
hike used to be quite beautiful but since the Bull Fire the
landscape is pretty barren and wildlife is mostly gone. The only
nice thing is that by the end of October 2010 many of the burned
trees are already showing signs of regrowth.
