Geocache Description:

Lets get together for an evening of AC and some good old stories of summer.A rummer only, there might be a souvenir given out for today. This is not confirmed yet but maybe.

The "dog days of summer" is a phrase dating back to the 1500s but has a history much older. the ancient Egyptians noted the rise of a particularly bright star every summer. It coincided with the summer solstice and the flooding of the Nile and a wise aspiring Pharaoh always made sure to time his ascension to that of the star's. This started with Ramses II and continued with Seti I and has been used to pinpoint the changes in dynasties. Hundreds of years later the Greeks named the bright star Sirius (Glowing/Scorching). When Ptolemy later named the constellations he put Sirius in the Canis Major - the Greater Dog - and Sirius eventually became known as the Dog Star. In their myths the dog was sometimes named Laelaps and was a gift from Zeus to Europa. (Aside from those who study these ancient myths only fans of Arthur C. Clarke's "Space Odyssey" trilogy have heard of Jupiter's moon Europa which stood as a home of some mind boggling extra terrestrial intelligence.) Being only 8.6 light-years away Sirius is frequently targeted by radio telescopes hoping to hear distant signs of alien life. Today the term "Dog Days" has come to represent the lazy hazy days of summer when hanging out on a beach is the perfect pastime.
