In the beautiful San Luis Valley, with a gravel road leading right to the spot. No climbing involved.

In a valley, far from the deep blue sea
Is a flag atop a crow’s nest
At a fort closed in 1883
You’ll get there with your GPS.

At the waypoint you’ve found,
Read the signs all around
To discover the first year
A trapper commanded here.

Buffalo soldiers served honorably
At this outpost way out in the sticks
Company G of what Cavalry
Arrived in 1876?

Insert the numbers you’ve found
In order, in the blanks below
And you’ll really cover ground
To the cache the Hermit did stow.

At a road that is Wilder
Where the winters are cold
And the summers are milder
With views of beauty untold

Try to arrive at sunset or sunrise
For good as the stash is
The best gold to be found is in the skies.
