Slaget på Stiklestad står som sluttsteinen på innføringen av kristendommen i Norge. I alle fall fra 800-tallet ble landet litt etter litt en del av kristen kultur, og norrøn religion og mytologi kom i forsvarsposisjon. Slaget betydde også at motstanden mot det gryende rikskongedømmet fikk en knekk. Innføringen av kristendommen og avslutning av vikingtoktene svekket den gamle høvdingklassen. Med få unntak ble kongedømmet godtatt etter 1030, og det skulle utvikle seg til en stat senere i middelalderen. Helgenkongen ble et samlende symbol for denne staten, "Rex Perpetuus Norvegiae" (Norges evige konge).

Ut fra slaget og helgenkongen kunne Stiklestad få en symbolfunksjon både for kristendommen og kongedømmet. Dette er utnyttet de siste par hundre årene. En ny nasjon skulle bygges opp, og store og små grupper brukte Stiklestad som møteplass når de skulle fremme nasjonale og politiske formål.

Idag er det kirka, kulturhuset og de mange museumsbygningene som gjør mest av seg på Stiklestad. Museet ble flyttet hit i 1950-åra, og kulturhuset stod ferdig i 1992.

"Spelet om Heilag Olav" blir fremført på den store friluftsscenen ved olsoktider. Hvert år kommer ca. 20 000 mennesker for å oppleve en dramatisk fremstilling av begivenhetene like før slaget i 1030. "Spelet" kan feire 50-årsjubileum i 2004 og er dermed det eldste og største friluftsspelet i landet!

Stiklestad is the battlefield where King Olav Haraldsson fell 29. July 1030, and he became known as St. Olav. The battle of Stiklestad represents the introduction of Christianity in Norway. The battle and the saint king made it possible for Stiklestad to act as a symbol of both Christianity and the kingdom.
