In 2007, about 100 Leopard tanks were retired. In 2010, 30 were decommissioned and gifted to RSL clubs across the country. On 4 Sept 2011, a dedication was held at the Palmerston Memorial Park for tank 27744.
The german made tanks never fired a shot in anger and operated for almost 30 years. The closest they came to "action" was on a warship bound for East Timor during the 1999 conflict. Tank 27744 was selected as a trial tank for testing of any new gunnery technology.
Palmerston RSL is the only RSL in the Territory that was gifted one of these tanks. For more information on the location of all 30 Leopard tanks go to www.defence.gov.au
You are looking for a magnetic nano. You will need to bring your own pen and a pair of tweezers will be very helpful as well. Whilst in the Memorial Park please take a moment to remember those that have fallen as well as those who are currently serving overseas. LEST WE FORGET
