Michigan Spirit Quest #63 - Saratoga Traditional Geocache

This cache has been archived.

allenite: I got out there today and the tree has definitely changed since I was last here. I found a different hiding spot and a cool stone to base the hide off of. Look for a new cache in about one month's time.

Geocache Description:

This cache is located in Saratoga Cemetery, Litchfield Township, Hillsdale County. Cemetery hours are from dawn to dusk

Saratoga Cemetery is located in northwestern Litchfield Township and is so named as this area was settled by many people from Saratoga County, New York, most prominently James Valentine. The road this is on is now Mosherville Rd, but was once known as Saratoga Rd.

A school once stood across the road and just down the road from this cemetery. The school was formed in 1840 where trees were planted on the ground at a cost of 25 cent each. A second build was constructed somewhere around the 1870s. The final brick structure was built in 1928 and served the area until it was consolidated in 1938 to the school in town. The structure was moved to Litchfield on the school grounds in 1945 where it served until being retired once again in 1952. Early teachers of this school lived with parents in the area most frequently the Smith or VanDenburg farm.
