Hangover at Sunrise Mystery Cache

This cache has been archived.

2Wheel'in: In its current form, this was the 3rd iteration of "Hangover" - placed way back in 2004 when there were few cachers, and few caches. I visited the little woodland park today with MooseMaMa...things sure have changed there over the years - the park almost seems neglected (or at worst, abandoned). I decided to archive the cache, rather than replace it. It had a good run for 11 years, was found 91 times, DNF'd 26 times, and 15 folks marked it as a Favorite. Many thanks to all who hunted it...I really enjoyed reading the logs. Both physical containers were removed today.

How Geocaching Works

Geocache Description:

Coordinates are NOT for the cache, rather they are for the access point to a level, wide grass path - walk it clockwise to gather necessary information. A beautiful hidden natural area with lots of wildlife. See parking coordinates - do NOT park in the nearby lot.

Child Waypoints didn't exist when this cache was originally placed, I have updated the cache page to include the waypoints for parking, and the interpretive signs. "No Parking & Towing Enforced" signs were recently erected at the entrance to the parking lot, probably to stop commuter parking. The towing company won't know the difference between a commuter, and a geocacher - so please park at the suggested parking waypoint, and be very careful crossing Sunrise Valley Drive!

You can circumnavigate this natural area on maintained grass pathways and mostly level terrain. The pathways wind through forested wetland, scrub-shrub, emergent marsh, and multiple habitat "edges". All of the coordinates can be reached on, or very near the path...only minimal bushwhacking is for the first stage. Short pants and sandals are not recommended.! As you take your stroll you will come upon 4 interpretive signs which describe the flora, fauna, and habitat areas of the park. The coordinates for each sign are listed below, as are the "gather clue instructions". Bring a notepad and pen/pencil with you because you'll have to complete some simple calculations to arrive at the first cache location. The final cache location is an “offset“ --- you will have to project a waypoint.

Sign #1 N38 56.909 W077 23.324 --- Count the letters in words 4 and 32

Sign #2 N38 56.969 W077 23.343 --- Count the letters in words 1 and 13 Add the total number of letters in those four words together, multiply by two, and add the result to the decimal portion of the Latitude for the access point coordinates listed at the top of the cache page. .

Sign #3 N38 56.964 W077 23.300 --- Count the letters in words 9, 22 and 36

Sign #4 N38 56.947 W077 23.244 --- Count the letters in words 16 and 39 Add the total number of letters in those five words together, and add the result to the decimal portion of the Longitude for the access point coordinates listed at the top of the cache page.

The resulting new coordinates will give you the location to the first cache container. There are critical “instructions” in that container (no pen/pencil though). Please take care when opening the container so you don’t lose the “instructions” - note how they are inserted. When returning the “instructions” please roll tightly, insert in the cap, and then screw on the base...then replace EXACTLY as found -- now on to the final, it's not far.

The final container is small and only has room for small trade items. Please do not over tighten the container, replace it as you found it…making sure it is not visible from the path (you'll see what I mean) that will help preserve the challenge for others.

NOTICE: Please be respectful of the posted park hours. If you enter the park after hours you are trespassing. If you are stopped you can be ticketed or arrested and will put the future of geocaching in the parks in jeopardy
