Geocache Description:

This is one of a series of 19 caches placed along or close to the Derwent Walk, a former railway line that opened in 1867 and carried goods and passengers from Consett to Gateshead until it finally closed in 1962.

The caches in this series are placed along a five-mile stretch of the Walk between Rowlands Gill and Ebchester Station.

Red kites were re-introduced to the Derwent Valley between 2004 and 2006 after an absence of 170 years and these magnificent birds can be seen and appreciated all along the Derwent Walk.

As well as the 19 caches in this series you will also pass close to other caches that you can bag, if you haven’t already.

The caches are numbered starting with No.1 at the Rowlands Gill end of the Geocaching Trail and ending at no. 19 close to the former Ebchester Station. However the series can be done starting at either end where there is adequate parking. Parking is also available near the middle of the series at Hamsterley.
