In de Romeinse tijd is men in Zuid-Limburg begonnen om uit kalksteen bouwstenen te delven. Eind vijftiende begin zestiende eeuw werd in deze groeve gestart met de winning van kalksteen. In onze omgeving gewoon mergel genoemd. Toen bleek dat de hier gewonnen kalksteen niet aan de gestelde eisen voldeed werd de delving gestopt.
In het Boven-Krijt (80 tot 65 miljoen jaar geleden) was heel Zuid-Limburg overstroomd door een "Krijtzee".Gedurende deze periode bestond Zuid-Limburg uit een ondiepe zee, grenzend aan een duinkust- en waddengebied. In deze tropische zee leefden veel planten en dieren die nu uitgestorven zijn. De hier ontsloten 'Maastrichtse Kalksteen' is bijna geheel opgebouwd uit skeletten van kleine planten en dieren die het plankton vormden. Ook reuzenschildpadden en de meer dan 10 meter lange Mosasaurus leefden in deze zee.
Het Streekmuseum van Valkenburg bezit een mooie collectie fossielen uit deze kalksteen.

In the Roman time in Zuid-Limburg they began to dig for limestone to make construction stones. By the end of the fifteenth/beginning of the sixteenth century, they started in this quarry with the extraction of limestone. In the environment simply called marl. When turned out that the limestone did not answer expectations the digging stopped.
In “Boven-Krijt” (80 up to 65 million years ago) whole Zuid-Limburg was overflowed by Krijtzee". During this period Zuid-Limburg existed from a shallow sea, bordering to a dune coast - and “wadden” area. In this tropical sea many plants and animals lived which have now extinct. The here opened up 'Maastrichtse limestone' has been almost entirely built from skeletons of small plants and animals which formed the plankton. Also giant tortoises and the more than 10 meters long Mosasaurus lived in this sea.
