ES: En 2001, se produjo un gran conmoción en la Plaza de la Constitución en Fuengirola. Se iba a hacer un aparcamiento subterráneo debajo de la plaza y para facilitar esto, el gran árbol en la esquina debía ser reubicado.
En ese momento, el impresionante árbol, un ficus, tenía más de 150 años y era el orgullo de la plaza.
Los planes llevaron a una protesta pública con mucha gente ocupando la plaza para protegerla de la reubicación. Hubo cánticos, música y un aura festiva y, a pesar de la presencia de docenas de policías, los protectores se negaron a ceder.
Y, como puede ver, tuvieron éxito. El 24 de abril, un juez local prohibió los planes para quitar el árbol, ya que violaba los planes urbanos locales de 1997.
ENG: In 2001, a great commotion was taking place at the Plaza de la Constitución in Fuengirola. An underground carpark was going to be made under the square and to facilitate this, the big tree in the corner was to be relocated.
At the time, the impressive tree, a ficus, was over 150 years old and the pride of the square.
The plans led to a public outcry with lots of people occupying the square to protect it from removal. There was chanting, music and a festive aura and despite the presense of dozens of policemen the protectors refused to give in.
And, as you can see, they were succesful. On April 24, a local judge prohibited the plans to remove the tree as it were in violation to the local urban plannings from 1997.
