Geocache Description:

This offset-cache begins in Tallahassee's Oakland cemetery which is only open in the daytime. The final cache location is about a mile away from the cemetery in an area that is sometimes busy, so watch out for muggles.

The coordinates should put you near a mausoleum, which is the final resting place of Calvin C. Phillips, an eccentric and noted architect who died in 1919. Mr. Phillips reportedly designed buildings for the 1890 World's Fair in Paris but was best known in Tallahassee for the clock tower he built at his residence on South Macomb Street (N30°26.083' W84°17.304'). The clock tower, which stretched some 30 feet high, was a local curiosity for years until it was torn down in the late 1970s after a failed preservation effort. Mr. Phillips also built his own mausoleum in a mishmash of architectural elements that borrowed from Greek, eastern European and Japanese styles. There are a number of legends surrounding Phillips, including a story about him napping inside the mausoleum one day and startling a passer-by who thought he was dead. Some even claim the spot is haunted.

The coordinates for the cache are: N 30° 27.??? W 084° 16.???. Nearby tombstones contain clues to solve for the missing information. The age of Annie Mae Murphy when she died multiplied by 4 will solve the latitude and the age of Thomas Foster Boone multiplied by 9 will solve the longitude.

The cemetery posted no trespassing signs March 2010. I spoke with the groundskeeper and was told that this was an effort to keep homeless people from camping out. So don't worry about it but please conduct yourselves in a respectful manner. The appearance of playing a game while people are there mourning the loss of loved ones is viewed by many (including the groundskeeper) as being disrespectful.
