Geocache Description:

The New England Forestry Foundation (NEFF) is hosting a Summer Geo-Challenge in 12 NEFF-owned Community Forests throughout New England. NEFF is a non-profit organization dedicated to promoting the conservation and sustainable management of New England forestlands. It is our pleasure to share these forests with fellow outdoor enthusiasts!

The Grand Prize Winner of the 2006 Geo-challenge is Laurie Maldari of Massachusetts. Congratulations to Laurie and thanks to everyone who participated. We look forward to next year's event!

Driving directions: Take the West Shore Road out of Salisbury and go 0.3 miles.
Parking and the entrance to the forest is on the right (N43 53.726 W73 05.595)

Follow the main road and skid trail thru the hardwoods. There is a cattail marsh on your left. After crossing a small outlet stream, you will be on a point on the Mud Pond shoreline. Note the cedar trees and wintergreen on the point, indicators of lime-rich soils.

Walk past the entrance gate. At N43 53.640 W73 05.547, look for a skid trail on the left. Follow this trail to the vicinity of the cache. No need to bushwack.
For the overlook, follow the main road to the cabin in the meadow. There is a great view to the north.

The Farwell Forest is composed of Northern Hardwoods (Birch, Beech and Maple), softwoods (Hemlock, White Pine and Northern White-Cedar). There is a large cattail marsh and Mud Pond. The eastern portion of the forest has many stone walls, evidence that it used to be pastures. It is now covered with young pioneer species (White Pine, Quaking Aspen, Paper and Grey Birch), and scattered wild apple trees.

Enjoy the hunt!

NEFF is grateful to all the wonderful volunteers throughout New England who placed these caches and made the Summer Geo-Challenge possible. Thank you “ExFS” for placing and caretaking are taking this cache in our Farwell Forest!!!
