The Grand Union Canal connects London with Birmingham, stretching for 137 miles with 166 locks. You will see signs relating to the Grand Junction Canal Company who agreed with the Regent’s Canal to amalgamate in the name of modernisation to compete with not only the railways but then improvements in roads and vehicle technology and the threat of lorries, or the white van man!
The Great Central Way follows the Great Central Railway, once one of the most important main lines in Britain. It’s visionary founder, Sir Edward Watkin, also founded the original Channel Tunnel company 100 years ahead of it’s eventual completion. He built the London to Manchester “Great Central” in 1899, hoping it would eventually link to France!
Guthlaxton Trail cycle route 6 is a recreational route for everybody including new barriers accessible to wheelchairs, mobility scooters, horses, walkers and cyclists, but not scooters and motorcyclists (sorry folks).
We hope you enjoy this series of caches of all shapes and sizes that encompass the waterways, abandoned railways and footpaths across our local nature reserves.
Getting to one with nature
Wildflowers are those that are ‘self-set’ and not intentionally planted or seeded, rather than flowers that grow wild! Whilst we have been following the footpaths, bridal ways, towpaths and ridgeways in Leicestershire, the Jammiedodgers have been looking for native species of flora that occur naturally in the area. We are now wild about flowers!
In the name of conservation
Many species of wild flowers are protected and should not be picked or uprooted. Taking photos or making drawings ensures they remain in their natural habitats for all to enjoy.

In-keeping with Groundspeak and Geocacher’s Creed these caches are hidden in support of the ethos that ‘the favourite part of geocaching is looking for it’. Your GPS device will take you to the approximate location (within 20 or 30 feet). Because ‘bushwhacking’ has a negative impact on the environment, stick close to the trail unless description indicates otherwise. Use your eyes and search, looking for something out of place.
