A devastating earthquake struck central Taiwan on September
21st,1999 at 1:47:21am. It was 7.6 Richter by USGS and 7.5km in
depth. Epicenter of the earthquake was at ChiChi, Nantou, which is
about 12.5km west of the Sun Moon Lake.
The sports ground of Kong-Fu Elementary School was right on the
Chelongpu fault. Since the activities were seismically complicated,
earth crust was raised. The eastside of the school's play ground
raised by 2 meters. School buildings next to the playground were
also damaged severely. The earthquake museum planned to preserve
the sites of the playground and the school buildings after the
earthquake to remind people the harm and hazard an earthquake could
cause.
