Update 04/04/2010:
The description at Wayoint 6 is adjusted, because the name of
Erasmus is not being used at this place anymore.
Erasmus Desiderata
(Nederlandse beschrijving.
For English description see second part)
of 1469.
a = het verborgen cijfer
q = aantal tegels langste zijde
r = totaal aantal witte tegels
schooltijd)!
Adagium 3: "Ne quid nimis"
(teveel is ongezond)
Waypoint-3: N (LI)° (LIV).(20*q-XXIV), E(IV)°
(XXVII).(30*q+XXIII)
tiener was.
Vraag: Hoeveel moderne ‘houten’ pilaren ondersteunen
Erasmus?
b = aantal pilaren min 10
Adagium 4: "In eadem es
navi"
(in hetzelfde schuitje varen)
Waypoint-4: N (LI)° (LIV).(20*p+LII), E(IV)°
(XXVII).(25*q+XVI)
c = aantal masten
Van WP-4 naar WP-5 is een fikse afstand
(ongeveer 1,5 km). Je kunt eventueel gebruikmaken van de
dichtstbijzijnde tram.
Adagium 5: "Hodie nullus, cras
maximus"
(uit het niets gekomen)
Waypoint-5: N (LI)° (LIV).(3*p+D), E(IV)°
(XXIX).(r-CCXXII)
Vraag: Hoeveel lijnen ondersteunen Erasmus?
d = totaal aantal lijnen
Adagium 6: "Inexplebile
dolium"
(een bodemloos vat)
Waypoint-6: N (LI)° (LV).(6*q), E(IV)°
(XXVIII).(30*q-CXXI)
in armoede.
Adagium 7: "Vita hominis
peregrinatio"
(het leven is een pelgrimstocht)
Waypoint-7: N (LI)° (LV).(10*q+XXX), E(IV)°
(XXVIII).(60*p-XIV)
drukker/uitgever gevestigd was. Wegens politieke onlusten vluchtte
Zwitserland in 1536.
f = totaal aantal letters
Adagium 8: "Respublica nihil ad
musicum"
(politiek is niets voor culturele geesten)
Waypoint-8: N (LI)° (LV).(r-XCII), E(IV)°
(XXVIII).(25*q-XXII)
Filosoof, humanist, schrijver, theoloog, of pacifist? Veel
g = aantal boogstenen
Adagium 9: "Plures adorant solem orientem
Adagium 10: "Vitiat lapidem longum
tempus"
(de tand des tijds)
Waypoint-10: N (LI)° (LV).(20*p+XXIX), E(IV)°
(XXIX).(4*q+IV)
Erasmus woonde slechts drie of vier jaar in Rotterdam. Zelf
iemand precies is geboren.
paneel?
i = hoogste minus laagste getal
Adagium 11: "Nosce te
ipsum"
(ken jezelf)
Waypoint-11: N (LI)° (LV).(10*q-XIV), E(IV)°
(XXIX).(20*q-IX)
toelichting?
j = som cijfers
finguntur"
(mensen worden niet geboren, ze worden gemaakt)
Waypoint-12: N (LI)° (a+c+h).({b+j-d}*2), E(IV)°
({g+e}*2+V).({f+i+d+e}*5+XX)
levensdoel.
Opdracht: Zoek de cache op de eindcoördinaat.
DEK DE BOX NA TERUGPLAATSEN WEER GOED AF
A.U.B.!
Post Scriptum
eindlocatie bepalen.)
Adagium: "Concordia fulciuntur opes etiam
exiguae"
(samenwerking maakt ook de zwakken machtig)
Waypoint-PS: N (LI)° (LV).(DCCCLXI), E(IV)°
(XXVIII).(CMLXII)
Soms is hulp onontbeerlijk.
z = jaartal gedeeld door 8
z = a + b + c +
d + e + f + g + h + i +
j

Erasmus Desiderata
(English description)
On the occasion of the 95th anniversary of the
Erasmus University Rotterdam in 2008, as an EUR-alumnus I dedicated
my first cache to its name giver: Desiderius Erasmus
Roterodamum.
It is not entirely certain that Gerrit Gerritszoon (as Erasmus
originally named) was born in Rotterdam, because his name is
lacking in the baptism registers. Even his exact birth year is
unknown: born in the night of 27 on 28 October, in the year 1466,
1467 or 1469. Gerrit was the second extramarital son of a priest
from Gouda and his house keeping employee, Margaretha Rutgers,
herself being the daughter of a 'medicine master' from Zevenbergen.
Possibly Erasmus created later the obscurity over his birth year
suggesting he was born before the time his father was dedicated to
be a priest.
Gerrit lived only up to his third or fourth year in Rotterdam
and further grew up in Gouda. He followed the parish school there
and later went to the Latin school in Deventer. But when both his
parents died, he went to a convent (pressured by his tutors),
without finishing his education. Around this time he adopted the
name Erasmus, which he completed later to Desiderius Erasmus
Roterodamum (the Desired Erasmus of Rotterdam). Because of his good
knowledge of Latin (and later also Greek) and despite his poverty
as a priest, he got the possibility to travel, in the escorting
dignitaries or on invitation. Thus he became the humanist and world
citizen, well known around the world as he is nowadays.
Many contemporary expressions have been borrowed from his more
than 4000 'adagia' (proverbs) which he collected from Latin and
Greek texts of antiquity. This geocache is a queste to what still
reminds to one of the most well known people from Rotterdam, by
means of a small capture from these adagia. Or are they
desiderata: reflections whether we have
sufficient eye to the particular Erasmus spots in Rotterdam these
days?
Adagium: "Consilio et
industria"
(think carefully before you start)
Waypoint-Parking: N (LI)° (LV).(CCL), E(IV)°
(XXXI).(CML)
The route of this geocache starts in the centre of Rotterdam. If
you come by car to Rotterdam a good place to park is near the
underground railway station Kralingse Zoom (close to highway A16).
There you can park for free, while it is very expensive in the city
centre. With the underground railway you are at the first waypoint
within 15 minutes. Then the route will guide you back into the
direction of the parking area.
If you come by public transport, get out at the Central Station of
Rotterdam. There you can also rent a bike (for members also
'ov-fietsen' available; alternativily you can also find those
ov-bikes but no regular rental bikes at Station Rotterdam-Blaak).
The first waypoint is only about 1 km away. However, back from the
end cache you will have to cycle for about half an hour to reach
Central Station.
Note: the route from WP-1 to WP-12 only will take you more than
4 hours on bike. Your average speed will be reduced by searching at
the different spots and off course: being carefull in the city
traffic.
Tabel: Character codes
Adagium 1: "Difficilia quae
pulchra"
(what is beautiful costs effort)
Waypoint-1: N (LI)° (LIV).(DCCXXXIV), E(IV)°
(XXVIII).(CXIV)
Erasmus frequently lived in poverty and did not have the
possibility to follow the education he wanted. But he disgusted
school at the same time and disrespected his teachers. A number of
his writings have been dedicated to his conceptions concerning the
school system: he disapproved physical punishment and - very modern
– he propagated education that takes into account the
individual need of students.
Appropriate is the illuminated quote for what is not visible
(but later we will see a glimpse). Don't get distracted by the
chiselled text nearby.
Question: Which number is hidden in the quotation?
a = the hidden number (sorry, only in Dutch!)
In the front of the building (on the Southeastern side) the head
entrance is situated. Also when the building is closed you can see
inside a remembrance to a philosopher who lived approximately 200
years after Erasmus and had some reputation in Rotterdam at that
time.
Question: Which period of years he was here, according to the
text in Latin memorizing this philosopher?
p = translation of the word in Latin
Adagium 2: "Necessarium
malum"
(a necessary evil)
Waypoint-2: N (LI)° (LIV).(DCCXXIX), E(IV)°
(XXVIII).(LXXIV)
Unfortunately entrance to the courtyard is not allowed. But from
some distance on the North-western side one can see an ancient
foundation nowadays situated in the courtyard, upon which the first
statue in the Netherlands was standing once somewhere else.
Question: Next to the foundation there is a white and dark paved
plateau. What are the characteristics of the tiles on this
area?
q = number of tiles on the longest side
r = total number of white tiles
Note: you don't have to get to the exact location of waypoint 2,
because from behind the fence you can oversee everything (even
after school)!
Adagium 3: "Ne quid nimis"
(too much is unhealthy)
Waypoint-3: N (LI)° (LIV).(20*q-XXIV), E(IV)°
(XXVII).(30*q+XXIII)
His whole life Erasmus had problems with his health. Also his
both parents died shortly after each other while he was still a
teenager. He himself had to flee from Deventer, where he followed
the Latin school, because of the plague (and later on also from
several other places in Europe always afraid of the plague).
However, his weak health did not hold him back from travelling
much.
Question: How many modern ‘wooden’ columns support
Erasmus?
b = number of columns minus 10
Adagium 4: "In eadem es
navi"
(to sail in the same boat)
Waypoint-4: N (LI)° (LIV).(20*p+LII), E(IV)°
(XXVII).(25*q+XVI)
Erasmus not only lived in the Netherlands, but also for many
years in France, Italy, England, Switzerland and Germany. However,
also a city like Rotterdam itself is sometimes in search of new
destinations or purposes. Where once the port areas extended the
city, with stock houses and a customs authorities area for goods
from all wind regions, new apartment complexes have been built
nowadays.
Question: How many masts are on the logo of the "portvs primvs
inter pares"?
c = number of masts
From WP-4 towards the area of WP-5 is quit
some distance (about 1,5 km). Eventually you can use the nearest
tram. After some stops you just get out the moment the tram starts
to turn away from the next waypoint.
By bike the shortest way is following the route of the tram. But a
nicer route is first the direction of the high tower and further on
just following the waterfront.
Adagium 5: "Hodie nullus, cras
maximus"
(to come from nothing)
Waypoint-5: N (LI)° (LIV).(3*p+D), E(IV)°
(XXIX).(r-CCXXII)
Erasmus has frequently turned himself against hoax reasoning and
false argumentations. According to him each debate has to be based
on honest arguments. Moreover there are frequently many views. For
this reason he tried to illuminate the other side, in order a
pleading is well supported.
Question: How many lines support Erasmus?
d = number of lines
Adagium 6: "Inexplebile
dolium"
(a bottomless barrel)
Waypoint-6: N (LI)° (LV).(6*q), E(IV)°
(XXVIII).(30*q-CXXI)
Often during his life, Erasmus was living in poverty. With
begging-letters he could however obtain graces, for example to
accompany a Bishop on his travels through Europe and later to be
able to study theology for 15 years (!). Probably he never imagined
his portrait to figure on the Dutch note of 100 guilders
ever.
For about 10 years the 'line' at this waypoint was called after
Erasmus. Nowadays nothings reminds of him, unless you imagine the
name you can read here, which is a Dutch translation of 'wallet' or
'purse'. But in English you can read some sms slang for 'Be Yours'
;-)
Question: Which colour has the line above the name
described?
e = 1 if the colour is red
e = 2 if the colour is yellow
e = 3 if the colour is green
e = 4 if the colour is pink
e = 5 if the colour is purple
e = 6 if the colour is blue
e = 7 if the colour is brown
e = 8 if the colour is black
Adagium 7: "Vita hominis
peregrinatio"
(life is a pilgrimage)
Waypoint-7: N (LI)° (LV).(10*q+XXX), E(IV)°
(XXVIII).(60*p-XIV)
It is said Erasmus has written a total of 38 millions words
during his life. At that time he was the most read writer. At the
end of his life, he spent most of the time in Switzerland, where
his printer/editor was established. Because of political riots he
escaped to Germany, but returned and also died in Switzerland in
1536.
Question: How many characters symbolise the travel from birth to
death of Erasmus?
f = number of characters
Adagium 8: "Respublica nihil ad
musicum"
(politics is nothing for cultural spirits)
Waypoint-8: N (LI)° (LV).(r-XCII), E(IV)°
(XXVIII).(25*q-XXII)
Philosopher, humanist, writer, Theologist, or pacifist? Many
types seem appropriate describing Erasmus. Between the three
important symbols of the city of Rotterdam: trade, science and art,
Erasmus is placed in the middle as a scientist. Such tribute is
liable to fashion, proving the election of greatest Dutchman in
2004, where Erasmus ended fifth (and some kind of confusion whether
William of Orange or the murdered politician Pim Fortuyn was voted
on the first place).
Question: How many stones form the middle of the three arcs
protecting Erasmus?
g = number of arc stones
Adagium 9: "Plures adorant solem orientem
quam occidentem"
(one honours rather the rising sun, then the undergoing)
Waypoint-9: N (LI)° (LV).(25*p-IV), E(IV)°
(XXIX).(2*q)
Is Erasmus reminded because of all his writings, or perhaps
because he read himself much? In any case, according to one of the
myths it is believed he still turns one page every night at 12
o’clock, curiously to get more wisdom!
A turbulent history full of facts. Now you know where the
foundation of adagium 2 was used for before!
Question: What is the sum of the chiselled (golden) end figures
of all years mentioned? (don't get distracted by the wooden
description suggesting another year).
h = sum of the end figures
Adagium 10: "Vitiat lapidem longum
tempus"
(the tooth of time)
Waypoint-10: N (LI)° (LV).(20*p+XXIX), E(IV)°
(XXIX).(4*q+IV)
Erasmus lived only three or four years in Rotterdam. Once he
wrote himself (in 1520): "It seems me of little importance where
exact someone was born. I think, it is a conceited form of heroism
a city or a country to be proud of people's origin, while they
became important by their own efforts and without the aid of their
birth country. The country which made someone important, is
entitled more in itself to be honoured for him than the country
which produced him."
A panel with an impression of the original house front marks
this ungracefull place. A strange contrast with former centuries
when people allover Europe came to Rotterdam to see this spot in
remembrance of Erasmus.
Question: What is the difference of the two numbers on the
panel?
i = highest minus lowest number
Adagium 11: "Nosce te
ipsum"
(know yourself)
Waypoint-11: N (LI)° (LV).(10*q-XIV), E(IV)°
(XXIX).(20*q-IX)
Was Erasmus always the serious man such as we know him of the
paintings? In any case, he frequently used sneers to put serious
matters to the jaw. With a contemporary view one could possibly
think this was meant to be humour.
Question: What is the sum of all digit signs on the
description?
j = sum digits
If everything went well you now have all
necessary information to find the cache (if not, read first the
Post Scriptum). From WP-11 towards the end location however is quit
some distance (some 2 km). Eventually you can use the nearest tram
and get out the moment it turns away from the final waypoint.
Or alternatively from WP-11 use the underground railway at the end
of the street (and get out at the third stop after getting
in).
Adagium 12: "Homines non nascuntur sed
finguntur"
(people are not born, they are made)
Waypoint-12: N (LI)° (a+c+h).({b+j-d}*2), E(IV)°
({g+e}*2+V).({f+i+d+e}*5+XX)
Erasmus’ life was dominated by self development and the
transfer of his ideas to others. Certainly this is a very
interesting ambition in life.
Task: Search for the cache at the end coordinate.
PLEASE AFTER REPLACING COVER THE BOX
CAREFULLY!
Post Scriptum
(This extra waypoint is normally not necessary for the solution,
unless you did not solve one before. In that case you probably will
find with this 'detour' from the original route another key for the
final location of the cache.)
Adagium: "Concordia fulciuntur etiam"
(cooperation makes also the weak people powerful)
Waypoint-PS: N (LI)° (LV).(DCCCLXI), E(IV)°
(XXVIII).(CMLXII)
Sometimes one needs help. Also Erasmus knew this very well and
he frequently used help of many people in his life (and sometimes
abused it). This geocache also has such a safety net. Somewhere in
Rotterdam-North there is an ordinary street named after Erasmus,
but furthermore it is almost anonymously. Little seems to remind of
him.
Question: Which year memorizes Erasmus?
z = the number divided by 8
With this number one could solve as a ‘joker’ one
missing number, if one had any difficulty to find some solution
from adagium 1 till 11. As a clue to the solution one should
consider:
z = a + b + c +
d + e + f + g + h + i +
