Camp Devils
Lake
During the years of the Great Depression the federal government
created the Civilian Conservation Corps to assist poor families.
The CCC recruited men between the ages of 17 - 23 to learn skills
while working on public projects. The CCC operated 60 camps in
Wisconsin, one of which was activated here at Devils Lake State
Park in 1935.
The CCC camps were self contained communities, with their own water
supply and sewage disposal systems. Camp Devils Lake consisted of
four, 50-man barracks and several other buildings including a mess
hall, bathhouse, chapel, library, dispensary and various garages
and shop buildings.
As you explore the park you will see many of the improvements built
by the CCC workers. Using native materials - quartzite and
hand-hewn timbers - the CCC created many of the stone buildings,
trails and signs that are still in use today.
The CCC activities at Devils Lake State Park ended in 1941,
however, the camp buildings continued to be used for other purposes
for many years. The last building of the former CCC camp was
removed in 1989. An information kiosk and a statue commemorate the
CCC presence at Devils Lake State Park.
The Geocache
