Geocache Description:

Keil Birch Creek Nature Preserve located on the south end of Menomonie. Easy walk until the end.

This is my first cache and is placed here to honor two of my favorite ladies (an entertainer and a granddaughter). In keeping with the theme we're gonna do the first part of this "Nice and Easy" and the second part is gonna be "Nice and Rough". The first part is a film container; the second part is an ammo can.

The initial cache contents include:

Travelbug: World Cup 2010 (TB1RQNT)
Travelbug: April's Happy-San Bug (TB120A7)
digital camera
head band
globe
bird house ornament
sea shells
snowman pin
balloons
hair clips

Welcome to the Keil Birch Creek Nature Preserve

Come and explore a natural oasis on the outskirts of Menomonie. This 28-acre preserve includes a high terrace overlooking the Red Cedar River, dense hardwood forests, and several small waterfalls. Birch Creek runs through a deep ravine in the center of the preserve. This area was set aside as a nature preserve in 2008 through the efforts of a local neighborhood group, the West Wisconsin Land Trust and a generous donation from Ray and Jan Keil.

A deep gorge highlighted with sandstone outcroppings dominates the land. Birch Creek flows through the bottom of the gorge. The creek empties into the Red Cedar River after meandering over a series of mini waterfalls and plunge pools.

The Red Cedar River forms the western edge of the preserve. The preserve is open to the public for non motorized use. It is also be available for school and college classes for outdoor education.

Both the riparian and upland elements of this section of land are critical habitat. Preserving this land provides extremely important benefits to both the Red Cedar River, the aquifer under Dunn County, and to wildlife that utilize the river corridor.

How to get there: From downtown Menomonie, follow State Highway 25 south for approximately 1/2 mile. Turn west (right) on 21st Ave. Follow 21st Ave. for 1/4 mile to River Heights Road. Follow River Heights Road to the cul-de-sac and trailhead, approx. 1.25 miles.
