First Splash into Caching Traditional Cache

This cache has been archived.

BakRdz: Gonna have to archive this one due to the area completely getting ripped up and redone as a Riverwalk. It's been fun. Maybe something new will pop up when the project is complete.

Geocache Description:

A quick classic hide. Not much room inside for swag. BYOP.

As I reflected on a new year of caching and my upcoming six-month anniversary, I fondly recalled the feelings I had at my first cache. I had heard about this “geocaching” thing a few years back from a friend, but had never tried it. (A decision I now regret!) When I finally purchased my first GPS, I decided I’d look up a nearby cache and check it out. I had no idea what a “cache” really was, so I tried to keep it a simple one. I chose a simple P/G P/R (for newbees, that’s a park and grab at a park and ride). Looking back, while it was not much of a challenge to find and I’ve since seen countless caches like it, the thrill of finding something hidden away that I had never known was there was so exciting. It really was the perfect introduction I needed. I quickly looked up a few more traditional caches and ran out to find those right away, each one becoming more addicting. The rest is now “ongoing” history.

This walk down memory lane made me start to think about what experiences other cachers had when they “lost their geocaching virginity,” so I decided to place a cache dedicated to this moment. The cache is hidden nearby the spot of a now archived cache that was the very first find for many cachers… including one former area cacher way back in November of 2005 who made a quick stop over his lunch break. (Note: This splashy cacher has since logged over 1600 additional finds!)

If you are completely new to caching or introducing someone to caching, this hide is a perfect introduction to the game. It’s a classic hide style you’ll become familiar with, yet provides a slight challenge for newbees. If you are a caching “vet”, this should be an easy P/G with a slight muggle challenge (depending on how the fishing is or who is playing at the Leach) and a perfect opportunity to share your own first caching story in the log. No matter which one you are, please share your stories of your first find for all to enjoy!

Happy hunting!
