This is a great opportunity for geocachers to give back to the National Park Service at Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore. We will be meeting in the parking lot of St. Anne Catholic Church, which is also the parking lot for the Amphitheater, near the control station to the Dunewood Campground.

Superstutz and 501_gang have partnered with Camp-Mom Volunteers, who has coordinated this project with Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore on an annual basis.

We will be doing a variety of projects for Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore. Be prepared to work and please be flexible. Some of the past projects have included painting, mulching, trimming trees, clearing trails, eradicating invasive plant species, and working in the wetlands with plant restoration. If you can do any of that, then this project is for you. There is a special beach cleanup project for all kids ages 12 and under that is chaperoned by volunteer moms and park staff. Equipment and gloves are supplied to volunteers and all projects are supervised by knowledgeable park employees.

After we complete our group projects we will have a lunch at the headquarters. Rarely do projects resume after lunch, but all projects are expected to be completed by each group.

Schedule:
8:00 AM - Meet in the church parking lot by the Amphitheater, just outside of the control station by the Dunewood campground. We will have a sign-in sheet, safety talk, and information on all pending projects. Volunteers will be assigned to their work group. Please be prompt!

8:30 AM - 1PM. Work on scheduled projects.

1 PM - Lunch at the Headquarters Picnic Area. Lunch will be provided for all registered volunteers.

Please plan to work the entire time. When posting that you will attend, please note how many people you are posting for. The NPS requires a list of all those who volunteer, so Superstutz will be contacting you requesting the names for everyone in your group and ages of those under age 18. Consent forms are mandatory for all minor children who volunteer. Additional information is required for forming various work groups. You must be registered to volunteer and work to receive your free lunch.

Please note in the log if you are willing to do painting, mulching, trail restoration, or work in the wetlands. We can't guarantee which project you will be assigned to, but special consideration may be given if your preference is stated. It’s not what project you do; it’s how much work you complete in the allotted time within each group. Also, please be flexible as projects may vary or change according to current weather conditions. Everyone works rain or shine without exception. If you plan to volunteer and would like to know more about camping in the Dunewood campground, please contact Superstutz for detailed information.

Last year we had over 50 volunteers including 14 geocachers. The NPS staff praised our efforts and said we exceeded their expectations. We planted over 2000 plants, moved three truckloads of mulch in the walk-in camp sites, rid the beach of trash and debris, painted four cabins, and eliminated a safety hazard on the beach by removing broken lighting covered by several feet of sand that posed a potential danger to beach goers. We accomplished a lot in a very short time by working together as a team.

You must post a will attend by May 24nd to be considered for this CITO event or have made prior arrangements with Superstutz. Thank you.
