This hidden gem of the Polk County Conservation Park used to be home to one of Iowa's largest great blue heron rookeries (nesting areas).
About ten years ago, damaging straight-line winds blew across Dallas County, affecting Granger and points east. The storm hit at the worst possible time: the young birds were nearly big enough to leave the nest. All the nests were destroyed, and most of the trees that contained them were blown down. This rookery never recovered. When I placed this cache I did see a beautiful barn owl flying through here.
