Geocache Description:

Cache is a 35mm film container.

The Portage canal was built to be the Wisconsin River - Fox River connection. It is built through marshy land and was started in 1837. It was not completed until 1876 by the Army Corps of Engineers. Unfortunately, by then, the railroads were on their way, followed soon thereafter by the automobile.

The canal was used until 1951, when the Fort Winnebago Lock was bulldozed in and the Wisconsin River Locks were welded shut. This part of the canal looks much like it did at that time. .

This cache is located on the Canal segment of the Ice Age Trail.

The Geocache Notification Form has been submitted to Sara Kehrli of the Wisconsin DNR, Poynette Office. Geocaches placed on Wisconsin Department of Natural Resource managed lands require permission by means of a notification form.
