About 5000 years ago herds of bison roamed this area. One bison strayed from the herd and fell into the nearby lake and perished in the muck at the bottom.
In 1969 the owner of the land was digging and found the skull of the bison. He contacted the U of I Geology department carefully excavated the site to discover the remains of the bison intact, still in the kneeling position.
