The cache is placed near to the Etosha Ecological Research Centre at Okaukuejo Rest Camp. Take note of the emergency contact number for poaching while you are there as well. This will enable you to report any suspicious behaviour while you are in Etosha.
Okaukuejo’s history goes back to 1901 when a German fort was built here, initially as a military outpost, but it was later used as a police post.
The round watch tower is the only remnant of the original fort.
Etosha was first proclaimed as a park in 1907, but is now only about one fifth of its original size.
A visit to Okaukuejo is not complete without stopping at the waterhole, which is floodlit at night, where elephants, rhino and lions are some of the animals which come to drink at all times during the day and night.
The Research Centre was officially opened on 1 April 1974 and is world renowned for the Anthrax research which has been conducted here. Of particular interest to visitors is the display of dung from different animals, as well as a variety of animal footprints in the path leading to the centre.
Over the years, the staff at the centre have also conducted research projects into rhino, elephant, giraffe, black mongoose, spotted hyena, FIV in lions, vultures, kori bustard and blue crane, just to mention a few.
