Geocache Description:

Monona is celebrating it's 75th annaversery in 2013.  This cache is one of many to highlight our parks.  These caches will continue to be maintained by our parks and recreation department.  Enjoy! For the 75th event, make sure to note the letter written on the log sheet.

One of Monona's newest parks, Ahuska Park is located between East Broadway and the Beltline, directly south of Roselawn Cemetery.  This 22-acre park has easy access to Monona Drive and the Beltline. It is the site of a weekly Sunday morning Farmer’s Market from May through October, and will soon be the home of a Veteran's Memorial.  The park is primarily flat and open, and is well shielded from the highway by berms and landscaping.  Entrance to the park is off of 400 E. Broadway, into a large landscaped and lighted 150-stall parking lot.  Ahuska Park contains two finished, full-size soccer/football fields, one of them lit for night games. The football field was re-named Haukereid Field after Pee Wee Football Founder and organizer Maurie Haukereid.  The field is now home to the Monona Grove Youth Football program and the Monona Warriors Adult tackle football league. It also features a lighted baseball diamond, which is home to our local Home Talent baseball team, eight lighted tennis courts, a small playground for young children, a sand volleyball court, and a large shelter with bathrooms that can be rented. The name “Ahuska” is the Ho-Chunk Indian word for “whitewing,” which was the name of the last Ho-Chunk family to live on the park’s land.
