Geocache Description:

The event itself is a 1/1 and can be attended by absolutely anyone; however, after meeting and greeting, those who are interested will have the chance to hike ten miles on the Iron Goat Trail.

Let's explore different parts of 48 North over the coming months!

All cachers, whether WSGA members or not, are welcome. New cachers and hikers are especially welcome.

WHAT: Breakfast Meet & Greet, followed by optional hike along the Iron Goat Trail
WHEN: 9-9:30 a.m., Saturday, May 25, 2013 (followed by a hike that will last until mid- to late afternoon)
WHERE: Interpretive Center Trailhead of the Iron Goat Trail

We can meet at the Interpretive Center of the Iron Goat Trail for a potluck breakfast, then hike this beautifully-maintained trail with its unique history. We will hike northwest to Martin Creek along the lower trail, then roughly southeast along the upper trail to Windy Point, then northeast as far as we can go towards Wellington, then turn around when/if the snow gets bad and go back to Windy Point, where we will take the switchbacks down to our starting spot. You will not need a Discover Pass to park at the Interpretive Center, and we will not need to shuttle vehicles.

The trail follows an abandoned stretch of the Great Northern Railway, passing tunnels, snowsheds, and the site of the Wellington railway disaster of 1901, when nearly a hundred people lost their lives.

Please log your "Will attend" for this event because late melt-out at Wellington might cause a change in the hike route, and I will want to let people know if that happens.

Bring something breakfast-y to share at the trailhead. Kids accompanied by their parents are fine on the hike; unaccompanied minors are not. Hikers should wear sturdy shoes (nothing technical needed), dress for the weather, and bring a day pack with rain gear, lunch, and water. You might want a camera and binoculars.
