In reality 'the lake' - is actually a small alpine pond famous for its reflections of maunga Taranaki.
It has for a long time been a popular day trip from New Plymouth via the Mangorei track, but is now "world famous" since it featured on the cover of the 15th edition Lonely Planet guide for New Zealand, published in 2010.
As with all 'tramping trips into New Zealand's back country it is important to plan and prepare your trip and be well equipped.
This cache is in an alpine environment. Even in Summer when the wind gets up and the cloud settles, it can be as cold as a winter's day.
Incidentally, the Pouakai Hut was moved to its current location after the death from hypothermia of a youth in this area, trying to make the old hut which was further along the tops towards Pouakai trig.
Before you go, know these 5 simple rules of the Outdoor Safety Code to help you stay safe:
- Plan your trip: Take a map/track brochure and remember to buy hut tickets for an overnight stay in Pouakai Hut.
- Tell someone responsible where you are going and your estimated return time.
- Be aware of the weather: Check weather forecasts before you go.
- Know your limits.
- Take sufficient supplies and consider taking a personal locator beacon
Weather on the mountain changes rapidly. You must be well prepared with suitable clothing and equipment for all weather and conditions.
This could happen anytime in Autumn or Winter
The time for a comfortable hike from Mangorei Road end to Pouakai Hut to the tarn and return will take about 6 hours, including lunch and photo breaks.
