Am 4. November 1901 wurde im Ratskeller des Rathauses Steglitz der Verein „Ausschuss für Schülerfahrten“ gegründet. Die Gründer, Lehrer und ehemalige Schüler des Gymnasiums Steglitz, vor dem ihr hier steht, gaben ihrer Bewegung bald den poetischen Namen „Wandervogel“. Damit griffen sie ein Zauberwort auf, das seit der Dichtung der Romantik die Sehnsucht nach Ferne und Abenteuer ausdrückte. „Und wer die blaue Blume finden will, der muss ein Wandervogel sein“, heißt es in der Wandervogel-Hymne „Wir wollen zu Land ausfahren“ von Hjalmar Kutzleb.

Am Gymnasium Steglitz, dessen Gebäudefront heute noch genauso aussieht wie zur Wandervogel-Gründungszeit, gab es um die Jahrhundertwende viele reformorientierte Lehrer, die selbstorganisierte Initiativen von Schülern förderten, unter anderem das Wandern ohne erwachsene Leitung. Dabei ging es um eine Gegenbewegung gegen die Stadtkultur und gegen die autoritäre Gesellschaft. Die Wanderfahrten in die freie Natur, die einfache Lebensweise und bewusst antibürgerliche Kleidung machen aus dem Wandervogel vor dem Ersten Weltkrieg eine ungeheuer attraktive, subkulturelle Jugendbewegung, der die Jugendarbeit in Deutschland bis heute beeinflusst. Sie formulierte ihren Anspruch in der so genannten „Meißner-Formel“: „Die Freideutsche Jugend will nach eigener Bestimmung, vor eigener Verantwortung, in innerer Wahrhaftigkeit ihr Leben gestalten. Für diese innere Freiheit tritt sie unter allen Umständen geschlossen ein.“

Im Gymnasium Steglitz, das bis heute seine altsprachliche Tradition wahrt, gibt es im zweiten Stock einen Traditionsraum, das „Karl-Fischer-Zimmer“. Es ist einem Gründervater des Wandervogel gewidmet und sein Eingang ist mit dem geschnitzten Wandervogelsymbol geschmückt, dem fliegenden Greif. Wenn ihr im Sekretariat fragt, könnt ihr es zu Schulöffnungszeiten vielleicht einmal ansehen.

November 4, 1901, the club „Committee for student tours“ was founded in the cellar of the Steglitz townhall. The founders were teachers and graduates of Gymnasium (High School) Steglitz, the building that you are standing in front of right now. They soon renamed the movement in a more poetical way and called it „Wandervogel“ (Hiking Bird). This was a magical word, used by romantic poets, and expresses a longing for distant places and adventures. „And the one who wants to find the blue flower, he must be a hiking bird“, is one verse in the Wandervogel anthem by Hjalmar Kutzleb „Wir wollen zu Land ausfahren“ (We want to hike into the open range).

The front face of Gymnasium Steglitz looks exactly like it did at the founding time of the Wandervogel. Around the turn of the century, many progressive teachers worked at this school and promoted self-organised student activities, among them hiking without adult guidance. Hiking in the open nature, simple living and anti-bourgeois clothing styles made Wandervogel a highly attractive youth counterculture bevor World War I. Its influences are still visible in German social work with young people. The Wandervogel movement formulated its goals in the so-called „Meißner Formula“: „The free German youth will create their lives on their own terms, in their own responsibility and with inner truthfulness. For this inner freedom, they will stand up united under all circumstances.“

Gymnasium Steglitz is a school where still today Latin and ancient Greek are obligatory for all students. On the second floor, there is a historical chamber, the „Karl-Fischer-Zimmer“ that is consecrated to one of the founders of the Wandervogel.
