Geocache Description:

WIND POWER

This cache has been archived since May 2003 and is NOT accepting further log entries.

In June 1996, Traverse City Light & Power dedicated the first utility scale wind turbine generator in Michigan. The wind turbine is a Vestas model V-44, 600 kW generator manufactured in Lem, Denmark, and has a rotor diameter of 144 feet (44 meters) on a 160 foot (49 meters) tower. The wind turbine has a variable blade pitch mechanism, which can capture the most energy from winds. In average annual winds of between 14-15 mph the annual production from the wind turbine is estimated between 1.1-1.2 million kWh’s, which is enough electricity for approximately 200 average Traverse City homes. At the time of its construction, it was the largest wind turbine in the continental USA/Canada. Only Hawaii had a larger wind turbine.

The rules:

  • Locate a wind generator of substantial size comparable to the one described above, no school science projects. Log your visit and include a picture of you, the wind generator, and your GPS all in the same picture. Be sure to upload your picture within 24 hours of posting your find.
  • Log the coordinates, city, state, and country location of the wind generator.
  • Do some online research or make some phone calls and include the rotor diameter, peak generator capacity, who owns it, and any other interesting information about your find in your log entry.
  • A wind generation farm may only be logged once unless they have multiple size and capacity generators in which case each size/capacity may be logged as a separate find.
  • You may only log this cache once and the first finder can only log a particular wind generator.
  • Make sure your find has not already been found by checking the cache log entries.
  • Respect private property, do not trespass. Call and ask for a tour of the facility.
  • YOUR LOG WILL BE DELETED WITHOUT NOTICE IF THE ABOVE RULES ARE NOT FOLLOWED. PERIOD.
