Geocache Description:

This cache site logs and documents synagogues worldwide that were built before World War I, (1917). Architecture back then was very impressive and the buildings were built to last lifetimes. They usually reflect the prevailing architecture of the times and the local culture.

There are hundreds of historic synagogues (Temples, Shuls) all over the world although in the US and some other countries, many grand, old urban ones have been converted to churches after the suburbanization of America. In Europe and other places many former synagogues were abandoned due to World War II annihilation of the local Jewish population. After the creation of the State of Israel, many Jewish centers in Muslim nations were forcibly terminated, leaving behind their grand synagogues.

To qualify for this cache:

THE SYNAGOGUE MUST HAVE BEEN BUILT PRIOR TO 1917 OR THE CONGREGATION FOUNDED PRIOR TO 1917 TO QUALIFY FOR THIS CACHE. POSTINGS THAT DO NOT CONFORM TO THIS REQUIREMENT WILL BE DELETED. LIKEWISE, CACHES THAT DO NOT CLEARLY SHOW THE SYNAGOGUE ITSELF WILL BE DELETED.
  • Take a photo of yourself in front of the main feature of the synagogue with your GPS.
  • Include a photo of the cornerstone or name so we can gather info on the date and name.
  • Limit is 1 log per cacher and a cache can only be logged once.

Try to post a nice picture(s) of the synagogue from the best vantage point.

Info about the synagogues' history would be appreciated.
