Before you seek this cache, please read this
This cache was placed by descendants of Charles Kettleson, who homesteaded this land in the late 1800s. The land was sold to the State of Iowa in March 1959. (Our mother, Donna, is the daughter of Glenn Kettleson, son of Charles.)
Your best approach to the cache is from the south, entering the area where the sign is posted for the Kettleson Hogsback. Immediately behind you to the south is a stand of trees planted by Charles. This was his tree claim, which was required by the government to qualify for the homestead in the 1800s. As you drive into the Hogsback, you pass through what used to be the tillable land of the farm. You will come upon the state maintenance buildings and caretaker residence. This same area is where the Kettleson house and farm buildings used to stand. Proceed past the buildings and park at N43°28.352 W095°08.692 at the canoe launch for Hottes Lake. There you may see white pelicans, trumpeter swans, and geese. Walk eastward for a few hundred feet to find the hiking trail that extends north across the hogsback. Follow the trail, which will take you very near the cache location. In addition to a log book, we included several cool treasure items for kids and adults.
We have good memories of our visits to this beautiful area. We hope you enjoy your visit to our Grandpa Glen's boyhood home.
