This is a nice gated logging road hike to a viewpoint of Maud Lake. Keep right at all junctions, but keep straight at N47 deg 36.528' W121 43.228' You are climbing back up at this point and the cache is about a quarter mile away. Total round trip is about 2 miles and 350 ft elevation gain.
This cache is rated at 3.5 stars because the last few feet is a scramble/bushwack to a summit of a peak, otherwise it's a fairly easy road walk that would make a good bike ride. I suggest that you keep on the left side to bag the peak and cache. It's sort of cliffy so if children are along, they should be kept very close by. No special equipment is needed, but just be very careful! Enjoy the views of the lake and surrounding country below you.
Note: ammo box is labeled as "McLeod Lake Viewpoint" I had made the wrong assumption that lake was McLeod rather than Maud. I didn't discover this fact till I checked my waypoints in TOPO when I got home.
Update 2: you now need either a motorized or non-motorized permit to access this area. Click on the link below and go to the FAQ tab for more information. Thanks! It's like 8 bucks for a day use non-motorized permit or 50 bucks for a yearly one. Motorized are way more expensive and not required for my caches.
