The city of Ely was founded in 1888. It was first named
Florence, after Capt. Pengilly's daughter, but because there was
already a town with that name, on April 23, 1888 it was changed to
Ely for Sam P. Ely, a mining engineer from Ishpeming, Michigan,who
never visited Ely.
My grandfather settled here in 1889.
THE CACHE IS DEFINITELY OUTSIDE THE BUILDING. You may go into
the building,only through the main door,if it is open and get
tourist information.
