Most Americans have heard the legends told of a large creature that walks upright like man, covered over with hair. Reports have been documented since the Indians roamed a vast wilderness area.Is it folklore, or do Sasquach or Bigfoot really exist?
The Portsmouth Daily times wrote on June 17, 1999 that “the legend of Bigfoot has been told for centuries, but some local residents have come forward to say it is more than a legend in Scioto County. Some residents claim to have seen Bigfoot, smelled Bigfoot and even been lifted off the ground by Bigfoot!”
The Ohio Bigfoot Research Team says it has investigated eyewitness accounts of reported encounters with Bigfoot like creatures in Shawnee State and Wayne National Forest lands in Scioto County. Shawnee State and Wayne National Forests represent a vast tract of wilderness land that together totals over 280,000 acres in the foothills of the Appalachian Mountains that borders the Ohio River.The national forest lands stretch into several counties across Southern Ohio, including Gallia, Lawrence, Scioto and Vinton Counties. Bigfoot reports have been generated within these localities for a number of years, dating back to an unusual instance in 1869, in which a father and daughter pair encountered a frightening, gorilla-like "wild-man" near Gallipolis, Ohio.

Ohio Bigfoot Research Reports Researchers Richard, Joe, and Bill Etterling.
“We began our research along a creek bed. As we followed this creek Bigfoot sign was in abundance. After about 20 minutes Bill was in the creek bed on a deer crossing when he said Joe! Come see this! What follows is the explanation of what we saw.
On the rocks in the dry creek bed was a lot of blood and remains of a calf. There are no farms within two miles of this location. The animal had been totally eaten at this location. We did examine the hair; it was brown in color, short, just like a calf. We searched a hundred yard radius and found no further sign of the carcass. Neither did we find a blood trail, or sign of the prey being drug out of the location we found its remains.
We then went to the rock houses above the location of this kill. We found recent habitation, but nothing was in the rock houses in this particular time frame. We went to the top of this high ridge and found sign that is made particularly by young Bigfoot. We searched the very top for ¼ mile on top this ridge. There were no birds, squirrels or nuts. Nothing. Silence.
Richard tried to decoy our following company, "Bigfoot", by using a separate trail to descend downhill. Half way down the hill the brush began crackling below Richard to his right. After about 5 minutes, Richard tried the "Owl" hoot. Bill answered from downhill. After about a minute rocks began to "clank" together above and to the right of Richard. The pounding of rocks was in sequence of five. Then they would halt. Then start again. This episode went on for about five minutes. Richard began answering by pounding rocks. The creature would not respond to Richard. That was the last we heard from the creature. As we arrived at the bottom of the hill, going to the vehicle we heard another owl call on the same hill.”

“I was deer hunting a few years back, I think it was in 94. I was way back off pine creek in Wayne national forest. I was in a valley sitting against a log. It was a cold evening. It was getting late and it was the last day for gun season so I was going to wait until dark before I came out of the woods. I wanted a deer.
Dusk was sitting in. I was getting ready to leave when I heard a big crack way down in the valley below me where the woods flattened out to a big thick flat area. It sounded like something just reached up and broke a big limb off. It was calm out. No wind was blowing so I knew a limb didn't blow down. Then something sounded like a women making short cries. Then another started not far from it. It was a deeper cry. There were 2 of them like they were communicating back and forth. Then it sounded like a calf or a baby deer crying like something was ripping it apart.
I didn't stick around any longer. I think it took me 20 minutes to get where I was in the woods and five to get the heck out of there. I will never go back alone or after dark.”
There have been numerous accounts of Bigfoot Sightings in Southern Ohio on internet sites such as ‘The American Bigfoot Society”, “The Ohio Bigfoot Research Team Website”, and “The American Sasquatch Society”, and many others. They say Bigfoot reports from areas of Southern Ohio represents a legitimate mystery worthy of serious scientific scrutiny. The believe reports and witnesses, sometimes very credible, are not taken seriously by the appropriate wildlife officers and scientific communities.
Bigfoot researchers admit that many aspects of the ongoing accounts regarding a Bigfoot-type creature in the Shawnee State and Wayne National Forest areas remain unsubstantiated. The stories are largely relegated to 'rumor and hearsay,' although some of the reports have been documented and investigated by researchers. The researchers say that no substantial evidence is known to support the eyewitness data. But for those who say they've seen them, they are very real. Thus, the mystery continues.

The first Bigfoot Sighting Geocache location is on Pine Creek. Take Scioto County Road #10 (Pine Creek Rd) about 1.8 miles from Lick Run Lyra Road to find this cache. Pine Creek Road runs between Lick Run Lyra and State Route 93.
Cache is a camouflaged large pill bottle with a log book. Bring a pen and keep a look out for the 8-9’ tall creature with brownish red hair all over! Keep your eye on the rock houses along Pine Creek Road along the hillside for a confirmed sighting!
