Has a coin attached from Kilgore. The Texas oil "Boom Town"
Kilgore was founded in 1872 on the Great Northern Rail Line.
Kilgore's fortunes changed dramatically on October 3, 1930 when a wildcatter named Columbus M. “Dad” Joiner struck oil near the neighboring town of Henderson.
The well was known as “Daisy Bradford #3” in what is now known as the East Texas Oilfield. The Well produced 22,000 barrels per day and sold for $1.10/barrel until the market was flooded and it plummeted to $0.15 per barrel. In 1931 production in the area was up to 1 million barrels daily. The field has produced more than 4.5 billion barrels.
In 1929 Kilgore had an estimated 1,000 residents, after the oil discovery it grew to 12,000 by 1936 with more than 1,100 oil rigs in the city limits. A 2006 estimate placed the city population just under 12,000.
Kilgore is approximately 120 miles east of Dallas, Texas
